Hey folks,  how's your Winter going??  Winter provides examples of things which a risk manager, or a fleet manager cannot ever do.  Risk Management cannot go dormant like the grass and the trees.  Risk Management cannot hibernate like a bear.  Risk Management must be as timely and disciplined as the engines powering the vehicles we manage.  The same thing has to happen in the same timing, over and over again, for an engine or Risk/Fleet manager to operate efficiently.  Repeatability is a crucial factor in successful Risk Management operations.  What are we repeating when we review our crashes?  We certainly repeat the meetings right, lol.  What behaviors, which led to the crashes we are reviewing, are being repeated in every crash?  What message about preventing these behaviors is being repeated to all drivers?  Are your backing crashes more or less frequent?  Are your distracted driving crashes more or less severe?  Will the advancements in Crash Avoidance technology in today's vehicle make us lazy as risk managers?  Will they change how we mange risk in our fleets?  Will they change our driver training?   In the vehicle selection process, selecting vehicles with advanced crash avoidance is a RISK MANAGEMENT strategy to REDUCE and TRANSFER risk.  What does our reference guide offer as to the impact of safety equipment?  See pages 43-46.

One example is from page 45 on the reference guide:

"According to a NHTSA study, and LDW system reduces the number of crashes by_______% and the number of seriously injured drivers by _______%.  In contrast, LKS systems were estimated to reduce the number of crashes by ______% to _______% and the number of seriously injured drivers by ________% to _______%. The LKS system with autonomous driving characteristics were estimated to reduce the number of crashes by _________% and the number of serious injuries by _________%."

    Trailer Backing Crash
You are sitting comfortably in your air conditioned office having just finished reading Chapter 5 of the Risk Management Guide.  Someone enters your office to notify you that the above vehicle in your fleet has been damaged while backing a trailer into a parking spot.  The trailer is undamaged. No towing was required. The estimate for paint and body repair is $1695.00, and a pool vehicle will be required for 5 days.  Pool vehicle cost per mile is $0.45.  The damaged vehicle utilization is 20 miles per day.  Your fleet is self-insured.  The National Safety Council factor is "5". What is the actual cost of this crash?

    A.  $1,695.00
    B.  $1,740.00
    C.  $1,650.00
    D.  $8,700.00
